Battery under the seat or in the boot
Not every battery is under the bonnet. Some sit under a seat or the boot floor, and the job needs room to lift the trim. Tell us where it is and we'll come prepared, in London, Birmingham or Manchester.
Why the battery is not under the bonnet
Makers move the battery to the boot or under a seat to save space in the engine bay, to help weight distribution, or because an AGM in the cabin or boot suits the install. The job is still a 12V battery replacement. The panels in the way are the difference.
On many Volkswagen Transporter vans the battery sits under the driver seat. The seat base has to come up. Many BMW saloons put the battery under a cover in the boot floor, beside or under the spare-wheel well. Do not assume your car matches those. Look, or say you are unsure.
What the fitter actually removes
Boot jobs mean a floor panel, sometimes a foam tool tray, and a vent tube that must go back on an AGM or flooded battery exactly as it was. Under-seat jobs mean trim clips and a seat base, with the wiring left connected and undamaged. Nothing is cut to make room.
The hold-down is refitted. A battery under a seat that can move will crack the case. Terminals are cleaned and tightened. If the car needs registration, it is done at the vehicle after the battery is in, not from a remote counter.
Access around the car
A boot against a car park pillar cannot be worked on until the car moves forward. An under-seat battery needs the door open on that side. Tell us the place: driveway, workplace or car park, in London, Birmingham or Manchester.
These locations often use AGM. An AGM must not be downgraded because the battery was harder to reach. Type your mobile number on the quote form and describe the location. We call you back. A healthy resting voltage is around 12.6V, checked once the battery is visible.
Questions before you send a quote
Is an under-seat battery a different type of job?
It is the same replacement, with more trim. Say so on the quote so the visit is planned for it.
Are boot batteries always AGM?
Often, not always. The label decides. AGM stays AGM.
Can this be done in a car park?
Yes, if the boot or door can open clear of pillars and other cars.
A worked example
A Transporter in a Trafford yard has the battery under the driver seat. The door opens fully and the seat base lifts. The fitter fits an AGM like for like and clamps it. A BMW in a Salford Quays car park has the battery under the boot floor. The car is rolled forward off a pillar first, then the floor panel comes up. Both were named on the quote.
Safety
Do not cut seat wiring or force a seat base past the belt stalks. Do not jump a battery you cannot fully see if the case may be swollen or leaking under the trim.
