How long does a car battery last?
There's no single lifespan. Short trips, heat, stop-start and a battery that never rests near 12.6V all shorten it. When it's finished, we'll fit a new one at the car in London, Birmingham or Manchester.
There is no honest single lifespan
This page will not tell you a battery lasts a set number of years. That figure would be invented. What wears a battery is visible in how the car is used: many short trips, heat under the bonnet, long sits, and stop-start cycling.
A healthy 12V battery rests around 12.6V. A battery that lives well below that, and cranks slowly, is showing you the state of charge and the state of the plates. The number of birthdays it has had is the less useful fact.
Use that shortens a battery
Short trips never let the battery recover what the start took. Stop-start adds cycles through the day. Heat speeds the chemistry up. A loose hold-down lets the case crack, which ends the battery whatever the date code says.
The alternator is not a bulk charger. A weekly long drive is better than none, but it does not rebuild a battery that is already sulphated or swollen. Smart charging can sit lower once the battery is reported full, so a mid-range running voltage is not proof the battery is new.
When replacement is the sensible step
Replace when the case is damaged, when cranking has become slow, or when a stop-start car has a battery of the wrong type. Do not jump a cracked, leaking, swollen or frozen battery to squeeze out another week.
The fitter comes to the car in London, Birmingham or Manchester. Type your mobile number on the quote form. We call you back. An AGM is replaced with AGM. An EFB may be upgraded to AGM. The date code is not a reason to downgrade.
Questions before you send a quote
Can you say how many years I should get?
No. This page does not publish a lifespan. Use, heat and battery type decide, and they differ by car.
Does a long drive fix an old battery?
No. The alternator is not a bulk charger. A tired or damaged battery needs a proper decision, not another loop of the ring road.
How do I arrange a replacement?
Quote form and your mobile number. We call you back. We'll come to the car.
A worked example
One car does a long run most weeks and rests near 12.6V. Another does two-mile trips, sits for days, and shows a much lower resting voltage with stop-start unavailable. The second battery is being worked harder. Neither car is given a predicted year of failure on this page. The second car is the one to quote for a correct EFB or AGM.
