Van and SUV battery fitting

Vans and SUVs often want a larger case, a higher Ah, or a battery under the seat. Tell us what it is. We'll come to it in London, Birmingham or Manchester.

Vans hide the battery more often

Many panel vans put the 12V battery under the driver seat or in the floor, not on a tray in front of the engine. The seat base lifts. Cables and belt stalks stay put. A long-wheelbase van in a yard needs the door on the battery side clear of a wall.

Ah is often higher than on a small hatchback, and there may be a second battery for a tail lift or a fridge. Say if you have two. We quote the battery that starts the van, and we will ask before anyone touches an auxiliary pack.

SUVs and boot floors

SUVs often carry the battery under the boot floor, sometimes AGM, sometimes with a vent tube that has to be refitted. The parcel shelf and floor panel come out. A boot full of kit has to be cleared before the visit, or the time is spent unloading rather than fitting.

An AGM in an SUV is replaced with AGM. An EFB may be upgraded to AGM. Ground clearance does not change the chemistry. Registration is commonly required on Volkswagen Group and many BMW and Mini models and varies on other marques, including plenty of SUVs.

Weight, access and the quote

These batteries are heavy. The fitter handles the lift. You do not need to carry an AGM down a flight of stairs. You do need a parked van or SUV in London, Birmingham or Manchester, with room to work.

Type your mobile number and say van or SUV, plus where the battery sits if you know. We call you back. There is no fixed price. A healthy 12V battery still rests around 12.6V. Do not jump a cracked, leaking, swollen or frozen case because the vehicle is large.

Questions before you send a quote

Do you fit van batteries under the seat?

Yes, when that is where the starting battery is. Say so on the quote form.

What about a second battery?

Tell us. We quote the one you want changed. An auxiliary pack is not assumed.

Are SUV batteries always in the boot?

Often, not always. The label and the floor panel will show. Ask if you are unsure.

A worked example

A long-wheelbase van at a Trafford unit has a single starting battery under the driver seat and a separate leisure battery for a fridge. The quote is for the starting battery, an AGM matched to the label, with the seat base lifted. The leisure battery is left alone because it was not part of the request. An SUV in Stockport with the battery under the boot floor is a different visit on the same rule: match the label, clamp it, register if required.

Safety

Support the seat base and do not cut wiring. AGM units are heavy: do not balance one on a bumper. Do not jump a damaged case. Orange high-voltage cables on a hybrid van are left alone.
