Wrong battery type on a stop-start car

A flooded battery in a stop-start car can leave the system switched off and the charging profile wrong. The fix is an EFB or an AGM, and registration where the car needs it.

What the wrong battery does

The car may still start. That fools people into thinking the fit was fine. Stop-start then stays off, a battery message may appear, and the charging system keeps a profile meant for a different unit. The engine starting is only the first job the battery had.

Entry stop-start cars expect EFB. Heavier ones expect AGM. A flooded battery is the usual wrong part. An EFB fitted to an AGM car is also wrong, because an AGM must not be downgraded.

Registration on top of type

Even the right battery can behave badly if the car is not told it is new. Registration is commonly required on Volkswagen Group and many BMW and Mini models and varies on other marques. The scan tool stores the type and the fact of a new battery.

A memory saver does not do this. Clearing a dashboard message without changing the battery does not do this. The repair is the correct battery plus registration when that model needs it.

Putting the right one in

The fitter comes to the parked car, removes the wrong unit, fits EFB or AGM as agreed, clamps it, and registers if required. Resting voltage should settle around 12.6V on a healthy 12V battery. Running charge is often about 13.8 to 14.7V, with smart charging able to sit lower once the battery is reported full.

The alternator is not a bulk charger and will not turn a flooded battery into an AGM. Type your mobile number on the quote form and say stop-start has failed after a battery change. We call you back. Cover is the three cities.

Questions before you send a quote

The car starts. Can I leave the flooded battery in?

Not if the car specifies EFB or AGM. Starting is not the whole duty of a stop-start battery.

Will registration alone fix a flooded battery?

No. The type has to be right. Registration records the battery. It does not convert it.

Do you replace it at the car?

Yes, in London, Birmingham or Manchester, after the quote callback.

A worked example

A stop-start Corsa had a flooded battery fitted because it was the one in stock. The engine starts. Stop-start does not operate, and a battery warning is stored. The repair is an EFB, or an AGM if that upgrade is agreed, fitted at the car. If the Corsa data requires registration, that is done in the same visit.

Safety

Do not keep jump-starting a car that already has the wrong battery and a swollen case. Do not jump a cracked, leaking, swollen or frozen battery.
